Variety Exclusive: Generation Iron Acquires New Documentary On British Strongman Legend Eddie Hall

Eddie Hall set to star as the subject of a new documentary chronicling his strongman career as well as his ongoing mental health battle.

In an exclusive report by Variety on Monday morning, Generation Iron Network, a premier New York City-based global digital media company focused on health, fitness, bodybuilding, and strength sports, announced the acquisition of worldwide theatrical and streaming rights for the new documentary, Taming The Beast – The Emptiness Within. The film delves into the life story of the iconic strongman Eddie Hall, featuring appearances by none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone.

Born in January 1988 in Staffordshire, England, Eddie Hall has become a household name in the world of Strongman. His accolades include winning the 2017 World’s Strongest Man title and securing victory in five consecutive Britain’s Strongest Man contests from 2014 to 2018. Beyond his formidable strength, Hall is making waves in the fitness and film industries.

The documentary takes a deep dive into Hall’s early life, revealing surprising facets of his journey. As a teenager, Hall was not the hulking figure we recognize today; instead, he excelled as a competitive swimmer. However, tragedy struck when Hall’s nan was diagnosed with cancer when he was just 12 years old. This devastating news triggered anxiety attacks and plunged him into depression, setting the stage for his eventual encounter with strength sports.

Taming The Beast – The Emptiness Within captures Hall’s transformative journey, exploring his struggles with mental health and how he found solace in lifting weights. Hall believes that lifting became a powerful outlet for the negative emotions he grappled with during his challenging teenage years.

The documentary, directed by Chris Michael Fretwell with co-director Josias Tschanz and second unit director Matt Bell, offers an intimate look into Eddie Hall’s life. It focuses on his efforts to confront his inner demons, navigate mental health challenges, and overcome his biggest failure to date.

What makes this documentary even more compelling are the appearances of two iconic action stars, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. The film not only showcases their friendship and mentorship toward Hall but also sheds light on the mental health struggles that even famous athletes and celebrities contend with.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone’s involvement extends beyond their on-screen appearances; they offered guidance and friendship to Hall throughout the filming process. Thanks to this relationship, Hall landed a role in Expend4bles, the fourth installment of the Expendables franchise. The film also features actor Gabriel Luna and ESPY-nominee Irish boxer Katie Luna.

Executive producer Guido Baechler, along with Generation Iron’s co-founder/head of content Edwin Mejia Jr. and Vlad Yudin, head of The Vladar Company, as co-executive producers, spearheaded the production. Edwin Mejia Jr. emphasizes the documentary’s goal to spotlight the interplay between mental and physical health, calling Eddie Hall’s story one of perseverance and hope.

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Taming The Beast – The Emptiness Within is set to premiere early next year. Vlad Yudin expresses satisfaction in bringing Eddie Hall’s story to a global audience and emphasizes the importance of the documentary in addressing mental health issues.

This documentary marks the latest addition to Generation Iron’s series of acquisitions, further solidifying their commitment to delivering compelling content in the health and fitness space. As audiences eagerly await the premiere, Generation Iron promises to provide updates, including release date announcements, behind-the-scenes glimpses, trailers, and more. Taming The Beast – The Emptiness Within is poised to be a poignant exploration of resilience, mental health, and the transformative power of strength.
